A transformative digital learning initiative has rolled into Buhuka, Kikuube District, as CNOOC Uganda Limited joins forces with Huawei Technologies (Uganda) Co. Limited to deliver a 10-day intensive digital skills training program. The outreach is being conducted through a state-of-the-art mobile training lab known as the “Digital Truck,” bringing computers and hands-on technology lessons directly to learners and community members.
This groundbreaking program is centered on primary school pupils, most of whom are encountering computers for the first time in their lives. By targeting children at an early stage, the initiative seeks to cultivate foundational digital literacy and spark curiosity about technology long before they reach secondary education. The goal is to ensure that rural learners are not left behind in Uganda’s fast-moving digital transformation.
During the official launch, CNOOC President Mr. Liu Xiangdong underscored the importance of early exposure to technology. He highlighted that introducing basic computer knowledge to young learners is a long-term investment in human capital, preparing them for future academic success, employment pathways, and meaningful participation in the digital economy.
Inside the Digital Truck, training begins with the essentials. Learners are guided through identifying computer components and understanding their functions before progressing to practical skills such as switching on devices and practicing basic typing. The step-by-step approach builds confidence among first-time users, turning uncertainty into excitement as students gain hands-on experience.
The program also embraces inclusivity by extending opportunities to selected community members. Instructor Moses Sebuwufu explained that farmers, small business operators, and other interested residents are given tailored lessons designed to meet their specific needs. This ensures that digital literacy is not limited to the classroom but becomes a community-wide asset.
For local entrepreneurs and farmers, acquiring computer skills opens doors to improved record-keeping, communication, and access to information that can boost productivity. For students, digital knowledge strengthens research abilities and enhances classroom performance. The ripple effect of these skills promises long-term social and economic benefits for the area.
The launch ceremony brought together key leaders, including Local Council I Chairperson Mr. Dismas Babihemaiso, alongside headteachers and learners from Buhuka Primary School, Starlight Primary School, and God is Able Primary School. Their participation reflected strong local support for initiatives that empower young minds through technology.
School administrators praised the partnership for its continued investment in education, noting past contributions such as textbooks, desks, clean water access, and support during national examinations. With the arrival of the Digital Truck, Buhuka is not only embracing innovation but also strengthening its foundation for inclusive growth and sustainable participation in Uganda’s expanding digital landscape.
